Hollywood movies have a niche down South

By creating a niche market in the city, Hollywood films have insulated themselves from regional releases

It is just 10 days after Deepavali but there seems to be no stopping new releases, especially Hollywood films. Last Friday, there were five new English films, each belonging to a different genre, vying for the box-office pie. The owner of a popular theatre in the city says that the audiences for Hollywood movies and Tamil films are often mutually exclusive. "Each has their own segment of audience; so, there is rarely a case on one eating into the other's collections," he says and elaborates, "Last weekend saw only the three Deepavali releases - 7aum Arivu, Velayudham and Ra.One - being screened across almost all theatres in the city.

This concept of wide release has enabled fans to catch their favourite stars in action as soon as possible. With the core audience having already watched these films in the first week, it is but natural that the second weekend is seeing new releases. But what should be noted is that no Tamil film was released last weekend. So, 7aum Arivu and Velayudham will still be the preferred choice of those who want to catch Tamil films."

"Dubbing in regional languages, much more access to international media through TV and the Internet, greater Indian presence in Hollywood films, increase in English-speaking audience and 3D are the factors why the Indian audience today has become much more eager about Hollywood films than ever," Kercy Daruwala, the managing director of a leading Hollywood studio, had remarked earlier. Also, the mushrooming of multiplexes has helped to cater to the premium English film audience.
This week will see three more high profile English films - Steven Spielberg's animated The Adventures Of Tintin, international superstar Jackie Chan's 100th film 1911 and the Frieda Pinto starrer Immortals, a 300-style mythological action film - hitting the screens in the city. Director Gautham Menon, who has boughuggs boots for cheap uggs boots for cheap uggs boots for cheap the Tamil Nadu rights of the Tintin film, says that the popularity among audiences depends on the film as well. "I don't know if there is the same buzz around The Rum Diary (which stars Johnny Depp)," he says.

It is in the presentation that Hollywood films manage to catch the eye of Indian film goers, says Santhosh K, a movie buff. "Even if the film has a pretty weak script (the Tranformers series being a prime example) they package it superbly. sequences ensure that these films have to be watched on the big screen, the aggressive promotion makes the movie an event not to be missed," he says.
