Movies help celebrate Black History Month
To help celebrate Black History Month and call attention to the achievements and contributions of African-Americans past and present, several Blu-rays and DVDs have been released.
Here is a sampling of some of the titles now available:
• "Thurgood" (Blu-ray) (HBO Home Entertainment): Laurence Fishburne stars in this one-man show that looks at the life and legacy of the Civil Rights activist and Supreme Court justice.
Fishburne gives a towering performance as the Marshall, capturing his warmth, humor, compassion and dedication.
• "Jamie Foxx Presents Thunder Soul" (Lionsgate): A tune-filled and inspiring documentary that tells the true story of high school band leader "Prof" Johnson, who transformed a so-so group of high school musicians into a funk powerhouse that gained national recognition.
The feature received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for best documentary.
• "The Tuskegee Airmen" (Blu-ray) (HBO Home Entertainment): Before there was "Red Tails" in the theaters, there was "The Tuskegee Airmen" on HBO.
The film, set during World War II, is based on the true story of the all-black 332nd Fighter Squadron.
The movie deals with how these black pilots not only had to fight the Germans in the air, but prejudice from their fellow Americans on the ground.
Laurence Fishburne leads an all-star cast that includes Cuba Gooding Jr., Courtney Vance and Andre Braugher.
• "I Ain't Scared of You: A Tribute to Bernie Mac" (Image Entertainment): This DVD, being released Feb. 21, looks at the life of this wonderful performer who died in 2008.
The movie follows the development of his comedic style and rise to popularity. The film includes interviews with friends and co-workers such as Tom Arnold, Angela Bassett, Cedric the Entertainer, Don Cheadle, Cameron Diaz, Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Soderbergh and Chris Rock.
• "The Josephine Baker Story" (Blu-ray) (HBO Home Entertainment): A dazzling HBO biopic that looks at the life of this groundbreaking entertainer, who did not let racism keep her from achieving her dreams.影视帝国性感动漫
