The incident occurred when Pramod Kumar (30) a businessman from Sonepat, Haryana, was returning home from Bawana with his wife Ritu, 24, and four-month-old son Mayank in their Santro car. Temporarily blinded by the glare of the headlights of a car coming from the opposite direction, Kumar lost control of the wheel and the vehicle plunged into the canal at around 7pm. Kumar, who knew how to swim, could only manage to save his son. Authorities were carrying out search operations till late at night but were unable to find Ritu's body. The Bawana canal claims atleast 10 to 15 lives each year in similar incidents. The entire 13km stretch which runs parallel to the canal has very few streetlights and there is not a single barricade to prevent vehicles from toppling over. The deep canal flows parallel to the main road, giving people the impression that it is another road. Police officials say that civic agencies keep passing the buck and refuse to put up barricades or cover the canal. Do you like this story?
