Boulder's Jeanne Ryan watches the Oscars every year, but not like this.
This year, Ryan — a self described “movie addict” — and seven of her friends settled into crushed-velvet stadium-style seats to watch the awards show on a big screen at Boulder's Boedecker Theater.
“We love this,” Ryan said. “It's more fun to watch with a group of people.”
The 60-seat independent movie house at the Dairy Center for The Arts celebrated its first birthday with today's sold out Academy Awards party.
A red carpet, some glitzy evening wear and champagne added glamour. There also were cookies from a New York bakery iced with the faces of the best actor and actress

nominees, appetizers, champagne, a birthday cake and, of course, popcorn.
As people waited for the Oscars to start, they talked movies. Would “The Artist” sweep the awards? Would “Hugo” get the recognition it deserved? Was “Moneyball” a contender for best picture?
“We loved a lot of the movies” said Boulder's Betsy Hand. “We want to be a part of it.”
Her husband, Albert Hand, is on the theater's film selection committee. He said the “Boe” has become not just a movie theater, but a community for those who love independent film.
“It really works, and it's a lot of fun,” he said.
Joy Pak, The Dairy's executive director, said the theater — named after its benefactor, George Boedecker Jr. — has “revitalized” the arts center. In the last year, she said, the number of visitors is up 15 percent overall.
Cinema manager Glenn Webb added that the first year was “better than we could have expected.”
In its first year, the theater sold 19,614 tickets and offered 743 screenings, including 152 that sold out. Along with movies, the theater presented live broadcasts of European ballets and operas. The most popular screenings, Webb said, were those that included a “talk back” discussion after the film.
“It's great fun to get together and talk about great movies,” he said. “Discussing a movie is sometimes the most important part of the experience.”
