Although it was the NBA's All-Star and Hollywood's Oscar Weekend, people still went to the movies ... and it was the military action-flick "Act of Valor" that ruled the box office.
The film, which stars active-duty U.S. Navy SEALS, topped all movies at theaters this weekend, earning $24.7 million -- and beat out the Amanda Seyfried thriller "Gone," "Tyler Perry's Good Deeds", and the Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston comedy "Wanderlust."
"I think moviegoers are ready for a new, fresh experience," said Kyle Davies, president of worldwide distribution for Relativity Media, who made the film.
"Tyler Perry's Good Deeds," a more dramatic offering for the consistently popular Perry, followed at #2, debuting with $16 million. In it, Perry stars as businessman Wesley Deeds, who is jolted out of his scripted life when he meets Lindsey, a single mother who works on the cleaning crew in his office building.
At #3 this weekend is The Rock's "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island", earning $13.4 million; Denzel Washington's thriller "Safe House" fell from #1 to #4 with $11.4 million; and "The Vow" falls to #5 with $10 million.
The weekend's other new releases -- "Gone" and the comedy "Wanderlust" -- had weaker debuts. Rudd and Aniston's "Wanderlust opened at #8 with $6.6 million, while Seyfried's "Gone" debuted at #8 with $5 million.
The box office was up 24.4% over the corresponding weekend last year, while attendance this year is up 20.4%, a surge driven by new films and not Academy Awards contenders.
That's a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax," and the party film/comedy "Project X."
